| U.S. SENATORS’ CALL FOR STUDY OF ACCESS TO MUSIC AND ARTS EDUCATION

NAMM announced that Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Senator
Lamar Alexander (R-TN) sent a letter to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), requesting that
the GAO conduct a study on access to music and arts education in the
American public school system since passage of the No Child Left Behind
Act.

| From the Capital to the Classroom: Year 4 of the No Child Left Behind Act |
New Report from Center on Education Policy found that a majority of
districts surveyed – 71 percent – reported having reduced instructional
time in at least one other subject to make more time for reading and
mathematics, the topics tested for NCLB purposes. (Link to Report). A New York Times article announced the release of the new report documenting the fact that school districts have narrowed the
curriculum in subjects including music and arts education as a result
